We celebrated Palm Sunday with Pope Francis. In the pictures you can see me (Daniel Bitman), Felipe Raed and a few guys from the US waiting at St Peter’s square for the mass to start. In the afternoon we went to visit the imperial forum and Fr. John Wauck explain to us a few things on Christian Rome and its great monuments. Fr. John teaches at Pontifical University of the Holy Cross.

March 25

Every single corner in Rome is amazing, see this picture:

In the afternoon we visited Scavi Vaticani, that is the cemetery underneath St. Peter’s Basilica where they found St. Peter’s tomb with the inscription “PETRUS EVÝ” which means in Greek “Peter lies here”.

See in the picture a moment of the visit:

March 26

In the morning we went to the UNIV FORUM at Pontifical University of the Holy Cross. In the afternoon we had a very interesting conference with William B. Hurlbut, a physician and Consulting Professor at the Neuroscience Institute in Stanford.

March 27

Today we went to Cavabianca to attend the get together with the Father.

March 28, Holy Thursday

Today we attended the Holy Week services at Santa Maria in Ara Coeli where we enjoyed the amazing choir directed by Max Lozano.

March 29, Good Friday

One of the things we did today was to go up the Scala Santa, where we could venerate the biggest relics of the cross of Our Lord Jesus Christ. The Scala Santa is a wooden staircase that covers the remains of the try staircase the Lord walked up when he was presented to the people by Pilate with the words “Behold the man!”

March 30, Holy Saturday

Today we were lucky to attend Easter Vigil at St. Peter’s Basilica with Pope Francis. In the picture you can see our group waiting for the ceremony to start.

After Easter Vigil we gathered at St Peter’s square to go back to the hotel to keep celebrating the resurrection of the Lord.

March 31, Easter Sunday.

Big celebration in the evening at a great restaurant close to Agrippa pantheon in downtown Rome. All of us were thinking the same: I want to be back here next year, and yes, I threw the coin to Fontana Di Trevi, so yeah, I’ll be back in Rome soon!

As 2023 is coming to an end, we want to thank you for your generous support of Northbow Educational Foundation this past year. Your support has been vital in supporting the apostolates of Opus Dei in Alberta.

We have had a busy 2023 including retreats, recollections, circles, spiritual direction, speaker series, family formation, family catechism, Kodiak father-son club, V3 seminars for older boys and the Kodiak camp. As well, there have been many activities for high school boys at Bowmont including weeklong summer workshops, and the weekly Peaks program.

Our residents at Bowmont have benefited from ongoing formation and a great family atmosphere. We still have room for more residents – young men that are attending university/college.

A little bit of background...

Family Development Canada is a non-profit educational charity that promotes parenting courses for married couples developed by the International Federation for Family Development (IFFD) across Canada. Its board members represent the different local steering committees from east to west in order to facilitate communication between the Family Enrichment Centres in the different parts of Canada and to expand to new areas when possible.

For more than three decades, tens of thousands of people around the world have benefited from courses in Family Enrichment. The courses began in the 60’s ‎and are currently offered in 66 countries, in 5 continents.

Based on the case study method, pioneered at Harvard Business School, participants read through a case, which is a short story depicting a real-life situation, and then analyze it to determine: the facts, the problems and the
potential solutions. In doing this individually and as a group, they acquire many important skills that will help them both in their personal lives and in their professional lives. They will be equipped to deal effectively with the challenges they encounter and work better as a team. Additionally, the participation in the courses builds a supportive network among families.

Family Enrichment courses are designed according to the developmental stages of life. The methodology is essentially participatory, consisting in the discussion of the cases. The cases are analyzed and debated in the large, General Group Sessions. These sessions are moderated by experienced married couples/parents who are experts of the case and its theme. Each case is accompanied by a brief technical note, which discusses the theme in a concise manner.

In preparation for each subsequent General Session, participants meet for one hour in a small group setting to discuss the case in a more relaxed & friendly ambiance. This fun get-together allows participants to get to know each other and share their thoughts on the case. Each small group has a team leader couple to facilitate so that everyone has a chance to speak about the case. There are no group opinions, just a friendly and open exchange. These foundational guidelines are upheld as the standard for participation.

Family Enrichment Calgary was founded in 2018 as the local centre for Family Development Canada in Calgary; it promotes and delivers IFFD courses because they offer support to parents by encouraging them to be united in their approach to parenting. The courses encourage parents to understand & appreciate the importance of their married love for the whole family. They also enable parents to identify needs, solve problems and set goals for their family. IFFD courses also provide parents with practical suggestions and ideas for their own family life given by experienced parents.

In this age range, children feel comforable in the environment in which they find themselves. As a consequence, they start making a wide range of personal decisions in many daily situations. To assist them in making good choices, and setting a good foundation for the future years, children need to have a set of values to us as a reference.

Good news to all fathers and sons, members or not, of the Kodiak Father-Son Club: activities have resumed!

The club has returned to its original format of fathers and their sons, who are around the 9 to 13 age range. An attempt to re-start activities took place at the beginning of September, but the plans were interrupted by the last round of restrictions. The hope was that the restrictions would eventually be relaxed and members would be able to meet as planned. As you all now, this is not the case, and things do not appear to be changing any time soon. For this reason, the club has decided that getting together outdoors is better than not getting together at all!

The first Kodiak meeting of the 2021/2022 season occurred on December 4. The location was Bowness Park, in northwest Calgary. Fathers and sons got together from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm, where everybody roasted hot dogs and played outdoor games. The turnout was fantastic and everyone had a lot of fun!

More activities are planned for the following dates:

January 22, 2022

February 26, 2022

March 26, 2022

April 23, 2022

May 28, 2022

June 18, 2022

For further information, registration, and specific activity times and locations, please visit Kodiak’s website.

As you may know, there is an Opus Dei centre in Calgary, where several activities are taking place. The fact that Edmonton does not have a centre yet – hopefully sooner than later! – is not an impediment to have activities for boys, young men, men and families.

Some of these activities are listed below, with a brief description of the activity and contact information in case you are interested in attending:

Young Professionals and University Students

This group of young professional men and university students meet monthly. It is interesting and refreshing to interact on a very informal and friendly basis with a group of individuals with a variety of interests and backgrounds, all seeking to make a positive difference in this world. It is a place where we encourage continued personal development, formation and support for all to reach their very best.

In addition to the monthly meeting, one of the numeraries and Fr. John have been travelling from Calgary to Edmonton on the first weekend of each month. During their few days in Edmonton, they organize a meditation for high school students and another one for university students and young professionals; both of which are well attended.

Fr. John also travels to Edmonton on the third weekend of each month; occasionally he gives a Recollection for university and young professional men.

A Study Circle is frequently run for young professional men, which has been well attended for a couple of years now.

Usually, once a year there is a retreat; the last one was held in the Gull Lake Area in February of 2020 with some 20 guys from Calgary and Edmonton in attendance. We hope to have a retreat for university and young professional men in early summer once COVID restrictions allow.

Feel free to ask any questions you may have, or if you wish to be part of either of these groups, you are most welcome to join us – drop Fabio a note at fjradm@gmail.com

The Edmonton Family Catechism

Started last October 2020 was a personal initiative of individuals who share common interests in the doctrinal formation of families in line with the Catholic Church’s teaching and doctrine.

Initiated by Dr. Jason West, professor and the current president of Newman Theological College, and a group of volunteers, the idea of forming a family catechism program in Edmonton was inspired by a similar program in Calgary that started a few years ago.

The program consists of classes for the whole family, parents and kids of all ages. There are separate classes for the parents given by Dr. West, and kids classes divided into different grade levels each led by a couple of volunteers responsible for their instructions.

There were nine families who signed up and 30 kids with ages ranging from 3 to 17 years old. The parents’ curriculum is based on the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and the kid’s instructions were developed by the catechist-volunteers adapted to the appropriate age level of the kid’s group. The kids’ activities consist of catechetical instructions, interactive games, discussions, video viewing, and break time. The program has become an opportunity for the kids to make new friends. There are volunteers to look after the younger kids who are not attending the classes yet.

The classes run from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m on Saturdays once a month, from October to May except December, and are held at Newman Theological College.

The timing of starting the catechism was challenging because of the existing pandemic quarantine. The first session in October was held in-person in Newman and was positively welcomed by the parents, kids and volunteers alike. However, after the first session, the succeeding classes for the parents went online because of the lock-down. The kids’ program was put on-hold until the classes can resume in-person.

The hope is to invite more families to take part in the Family Catechism program and to spread the word around that there is a continuing formation available to families to further deepen their faith through doctrine. New participants can join in the classes at any stage. We continue to accept inquiries and applications through edm.familycatechism@gmail.com . There is a $100 fee per family regardless of the number of kids. However, the fee may be waived depending on the circumstance of the participating family.

Volunteers are always welcomed!

Father and Sons Club

It is hard to raise kids in the faith these days with so many attacks on the family. With society putting so much emphasis on work and self, many fathers find it difficult to spend time with their sons on a regular basis to help build them into strong men of virtue. The current pandemic has given us more time together but it is still hard to make a regular choice to spend that quality fun time. With the boys club starting up again soon we are hoping to lay a solid foundation for our young men to build on, as they themselves look for faithful support during their struggles of becoming Godly men. This is why we started the boys club.

The boys club is a father and son group that utilizes the sacraments for formation. Sometimes we might get in a game of old fashioned pond hockey, or go fishing, or after Halloween (carefully!!) smash up some pumpkins into smithereens, of just sit back and enjoy amazing jerky and sandwiches.

It is a good place for fathers to bring their sons to just let “boys be boys” respectfully; and also to get together with other faithful minded men to share resources to assist in their vocation as fathers.

We haven’t met in a group since February 2020 but I still see constant growth in my boys since we started. I do feel the boys club has taught them to be accountable to others as God intended. We hope to start meeting again this spring to continue our efforts to help give our sons a place that they can feel comfortable being themselves while they grow in faith.

If there are any fathers with sons ages 12 and up we would love to welcome them into our group.

The intentions of the boys club are primarily for the boys. It is an opportunity to go to Mass and confessions monthly and for them to find trustworthy friends and support in other father/son relationships; to have other men they can look up to and of course to have some fun time with their fathers.

Also, if there are any fathers or boys 12 or older that you think would enjoy some manly time with their fathers and other like-minded boys, please feel free to pass it on and spread the news. If you are interested in joining us or have any questions, feel free to contact Kelly Ortmeier by phone at (780) 996-2928.

Dear friends,

This month Bowmont celebrates its 5th year anniversary! This anniversary may not be very significant, but nonetheless marks a milestone in the presence of Opus Dei in Alberta. It is with great joy and with immense gratitude that we celebrate this small but important moment.

In 2016, Bowmont opened its doors with the mission to help men grow in virtues and acquire the qualities of true leaders. During these gestational years, we have had multiple formational and cultural initiatives, including insightful guest speakers, classes, workshops and excursions. These events have helped us reach many young men in Alberta and it is our intention to keep offering these events. It is also worthwhile noting that as of this year, Bowmont has been home to more than twenty different students and young professionals from around the globe. Bowmont has been a place of growth, formation and fraternity for these young men.

We are thrilled to see Bowmont grow and leave its mark on the life of those who come around Bowmont. Taking heed of the words of Saint Josemaría “heaven and earth seem to merge on the horizon. But where they really meet is in your hearts, when you sanctify your everyday lives,” we want to help people find God in their everyday lives and expand the horizons of many men in this beautiful province of Alberta. Truly, we have just begun and look forward to expanding the reach and impact of Bowmont.

To commemorate this anniversary we have printed prayer cards of Saint Josemaría and St. Joseph, that you can find at Bowmont, in addition to branded apparel that can be found at Bowmont as well. All the proceeds will go towards a new Tabernacle.

I would like to take advantage of this milestone to thank you for supporting Bowmont throughout these years and in the years to come!
